Are you a comparasaurus? 🦕
How much time have you spent with your eyes glued to other people's content last week?⏳
Be honest: how much time have you spent with your eyes glued to other people's content last week? How impossible was it to escape the scroll hole after a while?
No judgment here, because let's face it – content is great! Not just great, but essential. I don’t know where I’d be without the #inspo. As creatives, we need it to:
Educate ourselves
Get inspired (yes, I know I just said we are creatives, but.)
Connect with a community of creators
But as with any good thing, consuming too much can tip the scales. One minute you're enjoying the scroll and the next you start feeling bad about your own work.
You become a comparasaurus (can’t remember where I first saw this word, but it stayed with me 🦕) and the guilt creeps in. It's a whole negative cycle you don’t need.
And all the while, you're spending precious time consuming instead of creating.
Unlike consuming, creating is an active process. When you create the focus isn't on you, your stats, or your competitors. It’s on your audience, what they need, and how you can help.
(That, or you’re creating for the sake of... creating! In today's share-the-everyday culture, this is a radical idea that goes against our love for the ‘gram, but it’s still a thing. I promise.)
And, when you shift the scales, you realise just how much value you can bring to the world!
Of course other people’s content can be great. I love nothing more than a good scroll every now and then. But creating is where your focus should really be. 🎨
